Emeka Okafor, Chris Singleton both injured before training camp

(WJLA) - The Washington Wizards were hit with a double whammy of injures Wednesday, losing two of the team's contributors to injury for what could be a significant amount of time.

The team first announced that forward Chris Singleton suffered a broken bone in his left foot while working out Tuesday at Verizon Center. Singleton, who averaged just over 4 points per game in 57 appearances for Washington last season.

In addition to Singleton's injury, the team says that center Emeka Okafor is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with a herniated disc in his back.

Okafor played in 79 games for the Wizards last season, averaging 9.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He was acquired last summer by the team in trade with the New Orleans Hornets.

"I have worked hard over the summer and was looking forward to the start of training camp next week, so this is a disappointing and frustrating situation for me," Okafor said in a statement.

Training camp is set to begin next week. The Wizards open the 2013-14 preseason on Oct. 8 against the Brooklyn Nets.

Their regular season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers is scheduled for Nov. 1.
