Florida school bus driver caught texting and driving

Of all the drivers on the road, perhaps none have more trust placed in them than the people behind the wheel of school buses.

In a suburb of Tampa, Fla., though, cell phone video appears to display a major breach of that trust.

According to WFTS-TV, a student in Hillsborough County was able to shoot video of her county bus driver fully engaged with a text message while behind the wheel of her bus.

"You're supposed to get them from point A to point B in a safe condition. That's not safe at all," Venus Cotto-Silva, the mother of the girl who took the video, told WFTS.

Technically, though, the driver under scrutiny wasn't breaking the law. Texting while driving is not yet illegal in the state of Florida, though that will change on Oct. 1 when a new law banning the practice goes into effect.

It's not clear whether or not the school district has such a rule on its books.

A spokesman for Hillsborough County Public Schools told WFTS that the driver in question has been removed from her route.

Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia have all made texting while driving a primary offense in the past few years.
