Government shutdown 2013: Agencies told to pepare for possible work stoppage

Federal agencies have been told to prepare for the possibility of a government shutdown, one that could commence on Sept. 30 if Congress doesn't act to extend funding.

In a memo obtained by Federal News Radio, the Office of Management and Budget is advising agencies that it would be prudent to start planning for a possible lapse in appropriations and, in turn, a shutdown.

The threat of a government shutdown is nothing new. It has been threatened several times over the past several years, and it almost happened in 2011. The government hasn't shut down since 1996.

The OMB memo says that agencies will, as expected, not be allowed to carry out even the most routine operations and administrative activities.
