Herbert G. Hayes sentenced to 40 years for stabbing death
A Washington man was sentenced Friday to 40 years in prison for fatally stabbing a man last year.
Herbert G. Hayes, 41, was found guilty in July of killing John Wesley Griffin, 42.
Prosecutors say Hayes chased Griffin down a sidewalk in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street NW on May 18, 2012. Griffin shouted for police as Hayes followed him into the street. When Griffin put up his fists to fight, Hayes stabbed him. Griffin staggered to the sidewalk and collapsed. Prosecutors say Hayes then stood over him with a knife in his hand and shouted an expletive about the police before running away.
Hayes was arrested and charged three days later.
