A Gainesville man died in a two-alarm fire early Thursday.
The fire burned on the third floor of an end-unit townhouse in the 8400 block of Tackhouse Loop, officials say. Firefighters received the call around 4:30 a.m. and controlled the fire enough to remove Stephen Frankenberg, 65, and perform CPR. He was later pronounced dead.
Neighbors tell ABC7 that Frankenberg lived at the home with a caretaker, who was not home at the time of the fire.
Neighbors Kevin and Ashley Movius heard firetrucks and firefighters responding to the fire.
"We saw the smoke coming over from the house over there and so we kind of ran down outside and the firefighters were going around back and they were trying to put the fire out in the back," Kevin Movius says.
When fireifighters knocked out the windows, he says, smoke was pouring out.
By then it was too late for Frankenberg.
Neighbors say Frankenberg had trouble getting around.
"He had a very difficult time coming up and down his stairs,” Kevin Movius says. “If he came down, it was pretty important for him to come down."
The cause of the fire is under investigation. At this point, foul play is not suspected.
