Two Stafford County Sheriff's deputies were wounded after exchanging gunfire with a man early Sunday.

The deputies were attempting to serve an order on Michael Antosh, 61, on Gordon Road in Spotsylvania when he barricaded himself in his home, according to a statement from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office. He then threatened the deputies with a large caliber firearm.

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded and tried to communicate with Antosh for several hours. They say Antosh was highly agitated and made several threats toward the deputies and others.

Around 2:30 a.m., Antosh began firing at the deputies, wounding two of them. Authorities fired back, striking Antosh.

The deputies are in stable condition at Mary Washington Hospital. Antosh had surgery for his gunshot wounds and is in critical condition.

Federal charges against Antosh may be pending.
