Super Bowl XLVIII ticket prices likely to soar; some will drop

A ticket to Super Bowl I between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, cost $6.

In 2014, the most expensive ticket to Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey will cost about 433 times that amount.

The Wall Street Journal, citing three National Football League sources, says that the league is close to approving a plan that will hike the price of its priciest Super Bowl ticket to $2,600. That's more than double than what the most expensive ticket cost at last year's NFL title game in New Orleans.

In turn, the league will actually drop the price of the game's lowest priced ticket to $500, the Wall Street Journal says, a decrease of $100 from Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers.

Tickets on the secondary market, from websites like StubHub and Craigslist, obviously go for many times more than face value.

An NFL spokesman told the Journal that the league is trying to close the gap between a Super Bowl ticket's face value and what he calls its "true value."

Super Bowl XLVIII is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2014 at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
