WASHINGTON (AP/ABC7) - The two leading members of the House of Representatives - Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor - will support President Barack Obama and his call for military strikes on Syria.

Boehner says he will support President Barack Obama's call for the U.S. to take action against Syria for alleged chemical weapons use and says his Republican colleagues should support the president, too.

The Ohio Republican says the use of chemical weapons must be responded to. He says only the United States has the capability and the capacity to stop Syrian President Bashar Assad and warn others around the world that such actions will not be tolerated.

Said Boehner: "This is something that the United States as a country needs to do."

Among those Republicans who are crossing the aisle to support President Obama is Cantor, who said in a statement that America has a compelling national security interest in the conflict.

“There are no easy solutions and a one-off military strike is not by itself an adequate strategy, but I am convinced that the risks of inaction outweigh the risks of a limited intervention," Cantor said.

Boehner spoke at the White House Tuesday after he and other congressional leaders met with Obama.
