Virginia Tech practice facility won't be built in Stadium Woods
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Tech Board of Visitors committee has approved a compromise location for an indoor football practice facility that will protect the 14-acre forest area known as Stadium Woods.
The buildings and grounds committee on Monday unanimously approved construction of the facility on part of the existing outdoor football practice fields adjacent to Lane Stadium.
University spokesman Larry Hincker tells the Roanoke Times that full board action is not required until it allocates private donations for the project after design work is completed.
A previous proposal to build the facility on about three acres of the woods caused a major uproar after forestry experts identified dozens of centuries' old white oaks at the site.
