Walmart hiring centers to open in two District of Columbia locations
(WJLA) - Just days after the D.C. Council failed to override a veto for the city's controversial living wage bill, Walmart officials say the company will open a pair of hiring centers next week for the city's six new stores.
Walmart's hiring centers, which are slated to open on Monday, will recruit potential employees for its locations at H and 2nd streets Northeast and on Georgia Avenue. Both stores are currently under construction. Those hiring centers will be located at 900 2nd Street NE and 7818 Eastern Avenue NW.
Both of those locations are scheduled to open by the end of 2013.
Walmart, which is planning to open a total of six big box stores in the district, threatened to pull out of three of their stores if Mayor Gray signed the Large Retailer Accountability Act.
That legislation would have forced large stores like Walmart to pay their employees $12.50 per hour, which is $4.25 higher than the city's standard minimum wage.
