A trio of states must soon come up with the money to fund Amtrak operations within their borders or lose some train service, Governing magazine reports.

Illinois, Indiana and California may all lose Amtrak service, which would affect routes that carry more than half of the rail service's ridership.

Nearly 20 states had until this month to come up with funding to finance most of Amtrak's costs in their states in an effort to standardize funding sources nationwide.
