Columbus Day restrictions: Public transit and road patterns change
Commuters will see changes in their routine for the Columbus Day holiday. But most will work in their favor.
Roadways in Virginia will lift HOV restrictions. If you plan on using 95, 395 or 66, the through lanes are open to everyone.
The HOV system will remain in place along 270 in Maryland and operate normally. Rules for the Express or EZ Pass Lanes along the Capital Beltway remain in place for Columbus Day.
Many cities will cut commuters a break when it comes to parking. D.C. and Virginia observe Columbus Day as a holiday. Officials will not enforce permit only zones or metered parking.
Drivers are also allowed to park for free in Metro lots on Columbus Day.
Public transportation users may need to check websites and schedules before heading out the door. Metro trains and buses will operate on a Saturday schedule. DASH will also run on a Saturday schedule. MARC and VRE will not be running.
