Debt ceiling: Boehner won't allow U.S. to default
GOP House Speaker John Boehner has told aides that he will not allow the U.S. to default on the federal deficit, going so far as to rely on Democratic votes to approve a debt-ceiling increase.
The Washington Post and New York Times reports that Boehner told several colleagues that he willing to do whatever is necessary to avoid defaulting on the federal debt, which is set to come up for a vote in two weeks.
The White House reacted skeptically, saying that GOP leaders have all along said they won’t allow the country to default but hurt the economy in 2011 by not immediately approving the increase to the debt ceiling.
