(WJLA) - Jessica Robles, a South Florida mother of three, found herself in the most horrifying of situations in late September - she had no food in her house and no money to buy any.

Desperate to feed her family, she took the drastic step of deciding to shoplift $300 worth of groceries from a local Publix store, according to WSVN. Naturally, she got caught by a Miami-Dade Police officer, but instead of arresting her, Ofc. Vicki Thomas stepped in to help Robles out.

"I asked her, 'Why would you do that?' And she said, 'My children are hungry,'" Thomas told WSVN.

After finding no major criminal history during a quick background check, Thomas gave Robles two things instead of arresting her - a misdemeanor summons to appear in court and $100 to buy food.

"All I wanted to tell her is thank you from the bottom of my heart," Robles said.
