(WJLA) - Even after the government eventually reopens and tens of thousands of federal workers go back to work, one vital thing could still be missing - their transit benefits.

The Maryland Transit Administration is telling commuters who take MARC trains and commuter buses throughout the state that their November SmartBenefits may not be released by their agencies or employers.

Commuters are told that the don't necessarily need to take any immediate action, but if the shutdown drags on, riders may need to plan for alternate ways to pay for their commute.

Federal News Radio reports that regardless of whether the shutdown ends sooner or later, commuters should be ready for lag time when it comes to receiving their benefits.

"It's going to take some time for them to catch up with all the financial management systems, and so there may still wind up being a delay for the Nov. 1 benefits," Federal News Radio's Francis Rose said Wednesday morning.
