Government shutdown 2013: D.C. Medicaid payments halted

(WJLA) - Health care organizations in the District of Columbia will not get Medicaid payments as scheduled on Friday due to the ongoing government shutdown, officials say.

Officials from the city's Department of Health Care Finance said in a statement Thursday that they no longer have the legal authorities to pay managed care organizations who provide care to Medicaid and Alliance beneficiaries.

The Washington Business Journal reports that the halted payments will add to the strain placed on D.C.'s Medicaid community. Beyond the shutdown, providers are still reeling from the collapse of the District's leading Medicaid contractor.

DHCF officials say that providers should continue to file claims. Payments will be distributed once the city's budget is approved by Congress and the government reopens.
