I-95 traffic this weekend due to bridge construction

STAFFORD, Va. (WJLA) - Hours before the lane closures were set in place, it was already a sea of red lights headed south as big trucks and cars were bumper to bumper on Friday evening.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is shutting down the southbound lanes of I-95 at 9:30 p.m. on Friday night – from just before the Marine Corps base Quantico at Russell Road, all the way south to the Garrisonville Road exit.

Overnight, from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m. in the morning on both Saturday and Sunday, the southbound lanes will be completely shut down with traffic diverted onto Route 1.

The shutdown will let construction crews safely lift steel beams for a new bridge to carry traffic from the future 95 express lanes. Though it is important work, it could make for a rough weekend for travelers.

So pack a little extra patience into your weekend, and plan on adding an extra 20 minutes or so to your commute time.
