It was a bitter custody battle that took an almost deadly turn in Montgomery County in Summer 2012. Prosecutors say 33-year-old Luisa Paiz hired close friend and former U.S. Army soldier Khiry Blue to kill Santiago Perez, Paiz’s son’s father.

Just before dawn on June 25th, 2012, Blue admits to attacking Perez outside of Perez’s Germantown, MD home. A photo taken shortly after shows a bloody gash.

Prosecutors say it was supposed to be a murder, ordered by Paiz with a $5,000 price tag. Charging documents say Paiz admitted to paying Blue, but asked Blue only to rough up Perez.

Late Thursday, the prosecution introduced one of their most significant pieces of evidence –a phone call between Blue and Paiz recorded after Blue was questioned by police.

Here’s a quote from the 28-minute recording:

BLUE: I'm the one that's gonna take the hit for it.
PAIZ: How do you know they're not gonna get me, too?
BLUE: Because you didn't have nothing to do with it. You brought up the idea--
PAIZ: Yes I do. I gave you--
BLUE: --and I'm the one that took it--
PAIZ: But I gave you the money. It was something that like I sent you. You know? You know what I mean?
BLUE: Yeah.
PAIZ: I thought you said that was all cleared and over with.

Blue has already pleaded guilty to attempted first degree murder, first degree assault and second degree assault.

Officials say a verdict in Paiz’s trial could come as soon as Friday evening.
