Melissa Porfirio is 2014 Virginia Teacher of the Year
The Virginia Department of Education announced Friday night that Melissa A. Porfirio, a first-grade teacher at Crestwood Elementary School in Fairfax County, is the 2014 Virginia Teacher of the Year.
Porfirio, 39, was selected from eight Virginia 2014 Regional Teachers of the Year.
“This is a group of dynamic and outstanding teachers,” Porfirio said, according to the Virginia DOE's announcement. “I was so surprised when my name was called. It is such an honor to represent Virginia’s teachers.”
As the 2014 Virginia Teacher of the Year, Porfirio received an array of rewards -- including a $2,500 award from Richmond law firm Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen, a classroom technology package, and a travel package from EF Education Trust.
