(WJLA) - Two U.S. National Guardsmen were shot and injured Wednesday after gunfire erupted on a military base about 20 miles northwest of Memphis, Tenn., officials say.
The incident occurred at an armory across the street from what is called the Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington. A member of the National Guard is now in custody after officials say he opened fire on two other guard members before being subdued by fellow soldiers. One guardsman was shot in the foot, the other in the leg.
Both victims have non life-threatening injuries and are expected to be okay, but the incident prompted a brief lockdown of the base, which employs more than 7,000 people. They say the shooter was a recruiter who had been relieved of duty. So far he has not been publicly identified.
Naval officials said on Twitter that the base was been placed on lockdown as a precaution. That lockdown was lifted at about 2:45 p.m.
There's no official word as to what led to the shooting.
