Cherry Blossom Festival 2014 to take place March 20 through April 13
(WJLA) - The weather may be cold now, and if it's getting you down, think of this - the annual Cherry Blossom Festival is only a few months away.
Washington's annual celebration of spring and its iconic cherry trees will take place from March 20 through April 13 of 2014, organizers announced Monday.
It's still far too early to anticipate when next year's peak bloom may be, but the three-week celebration will officially begin on March 22 with an opening ceremony at the Warner Theatre.
Other events scheduled for the event include the March 29 Blossom Kite Festival, a fireworks show along the Southwest Waterfront on April 5 and the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival on April 12.
The centerpiece, though, will be the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, which is scheduled for April 12 as well.
National Park Service officials say that the average peak bloom is April 4, but this year, it didn't happen until very late - April 9, to be exact. However, the earliest peak bloom in the past two decades - March 20 - happened in 2012.
