Childtime Center in Largo shuts down unexpectedly
LARGO, Md. (WJLA) - Mother Kelli Thomas says her children mean everything to her. So she was thrilled when she found the Child Time Center in Largo.
"The teachers there, they love those kids," she says.
But last Thursday, when she arrived to pick up her four-year-old daughter Aryn, she was handed a letter explaining that the center is closing for good – and just before Christmas.
Staffers say the center’s landlord, the Prince Georges Community College, gave the center short notice that their lease would not be renewed – which doesn’t give Thomas a lot of time to find a new place for her daughter.
"It's gonna be hard, it's gonna be stressful. I don't know if she is going to cry everyday," she says.
In a statement, the school goes on to say that “the college assumed that the learning care group Child Time would communicate immediately with its clients. If that did not occur, the college views this as unfortunate.”
The letter from the center also says the company had been searching for an alternate site, but Thomas believes there was another reason that parents weren’t told sooner:
"Greed. I think it was just greed. They wanted to squeeze every last every dollar they could out of us."
Late Wednesday afternoon, the center’s parent company, which operates 900 schools nationwide, responded with a statement saying they had been exploring options and “we do not inform parents until a final decision has been made.”
The center closes December 20.
