It turned into one of America's darkest days.

The president's assassination in Dallas on that fateful Friday left an indelible scar on our nation's psyche that continues to linger to this day. Each person who was alive on that day can likely tell you exactly where they were when they heard JFK had been shot.

This is exactly how that terrible day in American history happened. All times are Central Standard Time.

11:40 a.m.: President Kennedy and his entourage, including his wife, Jacqueline, land on board Air Force One at Dallas' Love Field.

Their itinerary for the day includes a motorcade through downtown Dallas, a luncheon and speech at the Dallas Trade Mart, a fundraiser in Austin and some quality time at a ranch belonging to Vice President Lyndon Johnson.

The president was joined in his limousine in the motorcade by the First Lady, Texas Gov. John Connally and his wife Nellie, a special agent and a driver. It was the second car in the motorcade.

About 11:55 a.m.: The presidential motorcade leaves Love Field for a drive through Dallas en route to the Trade Mart.

The motorcade follows a winding route that includes a trip through Dealey Plaza.

12:30 p.m.: As President Kennedy's car turns onto Elm Street, shots ring out across Dealey Plaza.

Three shots had been fired from the sixth floor of the nearby Texas School Book Depository. One of the shots hit President Kennedy in the head. Another hit Gov. Connolly in the back.

The Associated Press quickly sent out its first bulletin on the shooting.

According to the Warren Commission, Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots from a high-powered rifle. Witnesses later identified him as the man who shot and killed a Dallas police officer before being caught.

President Kennedy's motorcade quickly sped to nearby Parkland Hospital.

Televisions nations quickly interrupted programming to bring the horrific news to the country.

1 p.m.: After undergoing surgery at Parkland Hospital, a Roman Catholic priest was called in to administer President Kennedy his last rites.

After his last rites, the president was declared dead. Vice President Lyndon Johnson insisted, though, that the announcement not be made until he left Parkland Hospital.

1:33 p.m.: Press Secretary Malcolm Kilduff tells assembled press at Parkland Hospital that the president had died.

1:38 p.m.: CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite announced to the United States that President Kennedy had died.

1:50 p.m.: Lee Harvey Oswald is apprehended inside a Dallas movie theater.

2:38 p.m.: Lyndon Baines Johnson is sworn in as the 36th President of the United States. He, the First Lady and the body of President Kennedy are flown back to Washington.

11:26 p.m.: Lee Harvey Oswald is charged with the murder of President Kennedy.

Saturday, 11:21 a.m.: Oswald is shot and killed as he was being moved into the Dallas Police headquarters. Jack Ruby, the man who shot him, is immediately apprehended.
