Ladybug infestation normal for some parts of Maryland during cold weather

(WJLA) - If you're seeing an uptick in, of all things, ladybugs near your home, you're probably not alone.

An ecologist with Maryland's Department of Natural Resources tells WNEW Radio that Asian ladybugs tend to nest in area homes during the winter.

WNEW says that the Asian species of ladybug was brought to the United States early in the 20th century, but didn't become a thriving species here until the 1980s.

Luckily, ecologists say that by and large, ladybugs are harmless.
