(WJLA) - A trucker passing through western Maryland was hit and killed by a Maryland State Police cruiser while he was walking on Interstate 68 late Tuesday night.

Lamont Scaife, a 39-year-old Orlando, Fla. man, had left the cab of his disabled tractor-trailer in an attempt to unhook the trailer on eastbound I-68 near the Chestnut Ridge Road overpass in Garrett County.

When he returned to the cab, a piece of paper flew out into the travel lanes, and when Scaife went to chase the paper down on the dimly-lit road, he was hit by an oncoming State Police trooper.

Scaife was taken to the Western Maryland Health System where he later died. Conditions at the time of the accident were snowy.

The trooper, identified as Tfc. Scott Bell, was not hurt in the crash. An investigation into the collision continues.
