GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WJLA) - The search for a pair of suspects believed to be connected to Thursday's murder of a 25-year-old man in Gaithersburg continues Friday, officials say.
Michael Kirby Alvarado was shot and killed in broad daylight just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Montgomery County Police say, in the 400 block of North Summit Drive.
Police continue to scour the area for clues and the suspects, whom authorities only gave a vague description of.
The shooting happened in a parking lot outside the Streamside Apartments in Gaithersburg, a place residents call a typically quiet complex.
"I was walking on the sidewalk and I heard two gunshots," said nearby resident Kevin Hernandez.
The victim was shot and killed just as students from nearby Gaithersburg High were starting to return to the complex.
The apartments are within blocks of two middle schools and one elementary school, where students were kept inside past the closing bell as police used a helicopter, K-9's, and a SWAT team to search for the two suspects.
"Our primary concern initially was the safety of the community," said Captain Jim Daly with the Montgomery County Police.
Officials say the victim was shot in the head, and that they have not located any suspects yet.
"It was my first time actually experiencing somebody dying in front of me.," said stunned neighbor Mark Rodriguez, who witnessed the victim lying there on the sidewalk.
This is the most shocking incident to date in the area, but residents confirm that it isn't the first issue with crime here. Now, some are thinking of getting out.
"I got a daughter I've got to take care of, so I don't want her to be around a bunch of violence," said Rodney Price.
