WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Four hundred frozen turkeys were given away to people in D.C.'s Ward 7 Monday. It's thanks to a giveaway at the Deanwood Recreation Center in Northeast.

This year's need was greater because of cuts in federal food assistance programs. Cuts in the Supplimental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP  means cuts of $29 a month for a family of three.

What's different about this program is that it includes not only turkeys, but carrots, celery, and other veggies, for a healthy meal.

For some, this giveaway is the difference between a real nutritious meal, or maybe nothing at all.

"It's difficult for people to choose between food and medicine," said Sharita Slayton, D.C. Promise Neighborhood Initiative. "And do they actually feed the children or themselves?"
