A Maryland State Police trooper struck two teenage brothers - one fatally - with his cruiser as they tried to cross a Worcester Highway on Friday night, according to authorities.

Tymeir D. Dennis, 16, of Berlin, was pronounced dead at Atlantic General Hospital. His brother, Tyheym D. Bowen, was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma.

State police say Trooper Nicholas Hager, 21, a one-year veteran assigned to the Berlin Barracks, was driving an unmarked cruiser northbound on Rt. 113 near Bay Street, just south of U.S. 50. Police say the brothers tried to cross the street from east to west and "ran directly into the path" of the patrol car. Police say the trooper tried to take evasive action but couldn't avoid running into the boys.

Trooper Hager was taken to Atlantic General Hospital. His injuries are unknown.

The 8 p.m. crash is being investigated; police said they have not yet determined how fast Trooper Hager was driving.
