LANDOVER, Md. (AP/WJLA) - In the daylight, no obvious evidence remains of the tragedy that took place on Saturday night.
Police say a postal worker has been shot and killed in Prince George's County while he was on duty.
Police say officers were called to the 1600 block of Reed Street in Landover, Maryland on Saturday evening and found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Sunday, police identified the victim as 26-year-old Tyson Jerome Barnette of Upper Marlboro. Investigators say Barnette was a U.S. Postal Service employee who was on duty at the time.
Police are trying to identify suspects and a motive in the case. Investigators are asking any witnesses to call Prince George's County police with information.
The National Association of Letter Carriers released a statement saying the incident shows the need for safety considerations in how and when mail is delivered.
This letter carrier asked not to be identified, but says he warned managers that carriers were working later hours well into the dark.
In a letter dated November 3, the postal service worker wrote:
"The additional early darkness not only slows mail delivery, but creates an unnecessary unsafe working condition."
Then, weeks later, he sent another letter saying:
“December will be a living hell for carriers…delivery times will be persistently later.”
But he says his concerns were never addressed.
"Every letter carrier, once they're out there in the dark, they're defenseless," he says.
Back in Landover, neighbors are heartbroken to hear a young life was lost just steps from their doors.
