Working Women: Lauren Lang launches "Imagine Baby"
(WJLA) - Lauren Lang loves being a mother to Jake and Luke, but when they were much smaller and in their infant carriers, there was a problem. She couldn’t figure out how to protect her babies from the sun, wind, and weather in their Bethesda neighborhood.
"It all came down to chip-clipping blankets to my infant seat," she says. "We live in a very walkable community, we were always on the go with the kids, and I was always struggling with how to cover them and protect them."
Then one day, the idea for “The Shade” hit her.
“I still have the envelope that I drew the sketch out on that I look at on a day-to-day basis."
After a year of development, Lang launched her company, “Imagine Baby,” in 2012, selling “The Shade.” It’s an elastic car seat canopy with a flap. Lang also invented “The Shell” to cover the bottom part of the baby.
“Moms and dads are busy -- baby might be crying, squirming from the sun and you want something quick and easy to use that stays in place, no hassle," she explains.
There are already baby industry awards and a seal from the Melanoma International Foundation for the invention’s sun protection.
Lang ended up leaving her job in commercial real estate to start her company, and hopes her young boys will learn from their entrepreneurial mother.
“I hope their takeaway is that they see you can do anything you really set your mind to," she says.
“The Shade” is now in retailers across the U.S. and overseas, and online with several big name stores. Lang says sales are on track to triple for 2014.
