(WJLA) - One of the D.C. area's most recognizable television faces has passed away, according to multiple reports.

Mac McGarry, who hosted the iconic high school quiz show "It's Academic" for nearly half a century, died Tuesday at his Potomac home. He was 87.

McGarry's death was first reported by WTOP and The Washington Post.

"It's Academic" signed on in 1961 with McGarry as its host, and it eventually became the longest running television quiz show in the world.

He stepped aside after 49 years at the podium in 2011.

Before making his mark as the host of the quiz show, the Post says that McGarry covered events such as the Korean War and presidential inaugurations.

WTOP anchor Hilary Howard now serves as the show's emcee, but as she tells the station, the show will always be McGarry's.

"People who grew up in this town were touched by that show for generations," Howard told WTOP.
