MPD officials say that the African American Civil War Memorial, the monument that stands at 1925 Vermont Avenue NW, was hit by gunfire early Friday morning.

Authorities say that two men fired on each other just before 1 a.m. near the memorial. The shots left several bullet holes in the monument.

There's no word as to the identity of the shooters or how long it would take to make repairs.

The African American Civil War Memorial was established in 2004 and sits directly across from the African American Civil War Museum in Northwest.
