(WJLA) - Christian Bale tries to hold his family together in “Out of the Furnace by working at a steel mill. He watches over his dying father and struggling brother – played by Casey Affleck as a returning war vet.

But Bale goes to prison and when he comes out, his father his dead, his girlfriend has left, and his brother is earning money in the backwoods by bare-knuckle fighting -- and these fights are run by a menacing Woody Harrelson.

Tough times lead to murder and an unsolved mystery the police can’t touch. “Out of the Furnace” tries hard, but leaves you flat. Rated ‘R’ and at two stars, it feels like an imitation of other better movies.

Weekend best bets are: Philomena, Gravity, Nebraska, Frozen, The Hunger Games, and The Book Thief.
