Blackbirds found dead along Nokesville road

NOKESVILLE, Va. (AP/WJLA) - Despite this week's main topic of conversation in Nokesville -- the town's second annual Christmas parade -- a different subject is coming up: birds falling from the sky.

Prince William County police say dozens of blackbirds were found dead along a Nokesville road on Thursday afternoon, and authorities are now investigating the cause.

Officer Jonathan Perok, a county police spokesman, estimates that fewer than 100 birds were found. A Virginia Department of Transportation crew cleaned up most of the birds, but a handful still remained.

Animal Control and the Health Department are reportedly working together, and some of the birds have been sent away for testing. They reportedly think power lines are the cause, and a wildlife biologist tells us that mass bird die-offs are usually the result of lightning or some sort of trauma – like flying into power lines.

It’s definitely something to talk about on a day like today, on Friday the 13th.
