The 17-term Republican congressman from Virginia's 10th district announced Tuesday in a statement that he will not seek reelection in 2014.

"It has been an honor to serve the people of northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley," Wolf said in a statement. "I thank my constituents for giving me the privilege of representing them in Congress for 34 years."

Wolf was first elected to congress in 1980, making him the longest serving representative in Congress among those from the Commonwealth.

He says that he plans on devoting his time after Congress to working on human rights and religious freedom both in the United States and abroad.
