(WJLA) - A woman is in stable condition after she was shot by a police officer Wednesday in Hyattsville.

The shooting happened inside a home in the 5500 block of 43rd Avenue, Hyattsville Police officials say.

Officials say the woman's mental health problems were likely a factor in the shooting.

At about 10:30 a.m., police were dispatched to the home for a mental health welfare check. Officers had responded to a similar call at the same address the evening before.

According to authorities, a woman inside the home refused to leave the basement. Due to concerns for her health, the intent was to transport her for evaluation.

Police say the woman threatened officers with a knife and was tasered, but because the woman was wearing several layers of clothing, the Taser was not effective.

An officer then fired one round, striking the woman in the chest. She was immediately taken into custody and transported to an area hospital.

The incident is being investigated.
