UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJLA) - A former "Detective of the Year" and 23-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department pleaded guilty on Thursday for secretly videotaping a female family member.
Officials say Keith Tabron used two hidden cameras to tape an adult family member who had hit hard times and come to live with him. It happened over a nine-month period that ended in the summer of last year.
The victim eventually found both cameras. One was set up in the basement where she slept; the other was pointed at the shower in an upstairs bathroom. One had a cord that led straight to Tabron's home office.
“It’s unfortunate that not only was it a young woman, but it was a family member as well,” says Jeff Ragsdale of D.C.
“For somebody to patrol these neighborhoods and pretend to care about what goes on around here and do things like that inside their own home, it’s sad,” Ragsdale says.
This is the fourth time recently an incident has come to light involving a D.C. police officer and women or girls. Officer Marc Washington appears to have committed suicide after he was accused of having a teen runaway take off her clothes for pictures.
“It does bother me, but you know, it’s kind of like I’m hoping it’s a small minority,” says Richard Gunion of D.C.
Tabron took a plea deal and was given a five-year suspended sentence, which allows him to escape prison time. He is currently suspended without pay.
