(WJLA) - A Metrobus driver died Monday afternoon after becoming pinned between a bus and a wall, Metro confirms.

The driver has been identified as Thomasine Maria Smith, 47, of Laurel.

It happened in the 11200 block of New Hampshire Avenue at Silver Spring's White Oak Shopping Center around 3:30 p.m.

“It is with great sadness that I have to report that the bus operator did succumb to her injuries at the hospital so it is a very sad day for those of us in the Metro family,” says Dan Stessel, Metro spokesperson.

According to officials, Smith had exited the bus on New Hampshire Avenue to take a routine break when the bus began to roll. Preliminary investigation indicates that Smith attempted to engage the brake by reaching through the driver's window before becoming pinned.

Smith was transported to an area hospital where she died.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time.
