Mike Shanahan fired: Fans react to firing of Redskins head coach
WASHINGTON (WJLA) - On the heels of the stinging final - and 13th - loss of a horrid season, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan saw his days with the burgundy and gold come to an end Wednesday morning.
Shanahan, who met with the media shortly after being dismissed, briefly thanked the team and the fans for his four years in D.C., one of which included an NFC East championship.
"When you take a look at what the franchise has done (and) the opportunities given to you as a head football coach, you can't feel better," Shanahan said.
Fans had high hopes after last season's surprising run to the playoffs, but following it up with a dismal 3-13 season led to the firing.
"They had to," Redskins fan Jeb Shepard said. "Shanahan gave them no choice at all."
In a statement, Snyder said that Redskins fans deserve a better result, but as always, many fans think that hthe owner himself is part of the problem.
"He doesn't let his coaches coach," Redskins fan Tony Gorney said. "He picks favorites with players, and it just causes problems."
Allen said Monday afternoon that a search for the team's next head coach would start immediately.
