WASHINGTON (WJLA) - New Year's Eve festivities rocked the nation's capital throughout the night, as parties from the District to Annapolis rang in 2014 in a wide variety of ways.

D.C. area prepares to ring in 2014

As the clock ticked down to midnight, the frantic pace picked up throughout the area as different venues got ready to welcome the new year.

At the W in downtown Washington, the rooftop bar overlooking the nation's capital resembled the Moroccan capital of Marrakesh. Meanwhile, over in Thomas Circle, the Washington Plaza Hotel was decorated in five different James Bond themes.

Meanwhile, across the river, nearly 8,000 people packed several rooms at the Gaylord National Hotel at National Harbor at what was perhaps the biggest indoor party in the region.

And just across from National Harbor, one of D.C. area's biggest and most recognizable New Year's parties got into full swing long before the sun went down.

First Night Alexandria is a family-friendly way to ring in 2014, and as always, the Old Town celebration rocked deep into the night.

Tracy Cullo, one of the volunteers at First Night, said she appreciated that the D.C. area had an alcohol-free event that residents could take their children to.

"It's really special to do with your kids and have something that you can experience with them," Cullo said.

After a year that has seen mixed results for many local businesses, New Year's Eve offers a chance to try to recoup. Most area hotels are near capacity for the evening, and most are charging top rates for rooms and refreshments.
