FORESTVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - A 70-year-old woman was fatally struck on the Suitland Parkway in Forestville early Friday morning.

Police say the victim, an elderly woman, was crossing the Parkway around 5:45 a.m. when she was struck. The driver, who police say had a green light, stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Authorities say the victim was walking in an area where it is illegal to do so.

Residents say people have few options if they don't have a car. The bus used to stop on the south end of Forestville Road, they say, but now it only stops on the north end across the Parkway.

It's an accident that people who live in the area who dare to cross the treacherous stretch of road knew was bound to happen.

"This is definitely not safe," says Mike Smith, who often walks north on Forestville Road. "It definitely gives me second thoughts about crossing this street."

People who live in the apartment communities on the south end of the road say they have little choise but to walk up the hill and across Suitland Parkway, which is the shortest route to catch the bus.

"There are no streets (or) sidewalks," Smith said. "That's the only way to get across."

Police believe other drivers passed by at the time of the incident and likely saw what happened. They are asking for those drivers to come forward.
