Prohibition ended 80 years ago Thursday
(WJLA) - The United States' run as a dry nation officially ended 80 years ago Thursday.
On Dec. 5, 1933, Utah became the final state to sign off the on the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, ending prohibition in America.
The prohibition of alcohol was passed in 1920 and stayed in effect for upwards of 13 years. It included an explicit ban on the production, distribution and sale of booze nationwide.
In early 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt eased prohibition laws in the face of mounting criticism and an increasing wave of bootlegging. By that December, the law was off the books for good.
