HAYMARKET, Va. (WJLA) - Gloria Ferraiuolo lives in a place most consider to be safe: Haymarket's massive Dominion Valley development, aimed at folks 55 and over. In order to get to it, one has to drive through a gate

"It's an adult active community,” she says.

Yet despite the security, residents recently realized that someone was repeatedly stealing cash, checks, and gift cards out of their mail slots.

"It's kind of disturbing to think you can't mail something in your own building,” says Gloria, who adds that the thief targeted her a number of times over the last few years – stealing both checks and cash.

"I sent a couple of $50 gift cards for Christmas to California that never got there,” she says.

She says one year, her grandson thought she'd forgotten to send him any money for his birthday, and another year her son thought she'd forgotten his birthday altogether.

"I never forget his birthday,” she says. “And he didn't say anything, so I asked him, ‘Did you get my card? No, I didn't get it.’”

According to court documents, Robert Bell is the culprit who stole items from four separate condo buildings with 18 units each over the course of nearly three years.

A postal inspector set up a hidden camera, and in August on five separate occasions, it allegedly showed the newspaper delivery man entering this room and breaking his way into the mail slot.

The value of what was stolen? Nearly $100,000!

"Now I don't do any cash anymore or gift cards in the envelopes," says Gloria.
