(WJLA) - Two cars involved in a fatal crash in Springfield were likely racing at the time of the incident, authorities say.

The crashappened on at about 11 p.m. Wednesday on Franconia-Springfield Parkway near Spring Village Drive, Fairfax County Police say. Authorities say just before the crash that Brian Blaine, a 30-year-old Manassas resident, pulled up next to a man driving an Infiniti.

Shortly thereafter, the two cars apparently began to race, with both Blaine and the driver of the other car passing each other frequently. At some point, Blaine's Honda lost control, left the roadway and hit both an embankment and a tree before rolling over.

Blaine was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died Thursday morning. Fairfax County Police officials say that they have not tracked down the Infiniti nor the person driving it during the crash.
