WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A pair of water main breaks, one in Northeast Washington and another in Montgomery County, slowed commuters on their way to work following the long holiday weekend.
The larger of the two water main breaks occurred in Northeast D.C. along Bladensburg Road, near its intersection with Benning Road. Officials from the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority estimated that repairs to the 12-inch main would take between 6-8 hours.
With work underway, the east bound lanes of the 1500-1700 blocks of Benning Road NE are closed, as are the southbound lanes of the 800 block of Bladensburg Road.
In Montgomery County, an eight-inch water main ruptured along the 100 block of Gold Kettle Drive in Gaithersburg. Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Officials said the break affects 49 customers and will take several hours to repair.
At least one street in the area flooded as a result of the rupture, leaving huge pools of standing water.
