Bruno Mars preps for Super Bowl Halftime Show
(WJLA) - This dimly-lit auditorium will look much different on Sunday. But don’t expect anything too crazy from halftime performer, Bruno Mars.
"I don't do trapeze and all that," Mars said. "I hope to get people dancing, get people smiling. It'll be us out there with our instruments -- I'm hoping that's enough."
The 28-year-old singer has several hits, and on Thursday fielded questions about being such a young performer:
"I feel like I'm still a new artist. The NFL is such a prestigious stage, that they'd give the new guy a shot. I'm so honored."
There’s something else new this year – opera singer Renee Flemming will be singing the national anthem:
"The Super Bowl seems to touch everybody, it's a big audience, I would rate this number one. In my lifetime definitely, it will be number one."
Flemming is the first opera singer to perform the anthem at a Super Bowl.
"I wanted to make this my own, but we decided to keep it low key," she said.
But there’s nothing low key about the Super Bowl spotlight. Some of the greatest musical acts have taken that stage, and now Mars will become one of them:
"We were all watching as a band, last year's [show] with Beyonce, and we thought, 'Man what if we get the call one day to do that.' It defintely came soon, but [we're] just honored. Some greats have been on that stage, but just excited we're getting the shot."
