The crash happened just before 7 a.m. in the 4800 block of Rhode Island Avenue in Hyattsville, Prince George's County Police say.

Authorities say that the driver of an SUV was going north when she crossed over the median, hit a pedestrian and crashed into an upholstery shop. The person who was hit before the car ran into the building died a short time after the crash, and on Monday night, was identified as 24-year-old Jose Martin Huaman.

The driver of the car was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Officials said via Twitter that no charges are currently pending against her.

Investigators spent the majority of the morning trying to determine why and how the woman lost control over her car, but residents of the neighborhood believe that icy patches on the road could have played a factor.

"Right up where the accident occurred, there has been ice there for over a month," Hyattsville resident Susan Koch said.

Officials with WSSC said in a statement that they knew of two ongoing pipe leaks in the area where the crash occurred, one that was discovered on Jan. 7 and another uncovered two days later.

Crews were dispatched to fix the leaks at about 7:40 a.m. Monday, about 40 minutes after the crash happened. WSSC then made the decision to hold off on making repairs to the leaking main.

Matthew Shannon-Browne, one of the owners of ID Design Collective - the business the crashed SUV hit - says that he and his business partner are lucky that no one got hurt inside the building.

Shannon-Browne says he and his dog were in the building when the car came crashing in.

"He is OK...he is a little shaken up, but he is OK," Shannon-Browne said.

The owners of the businesses damaged in the crash plan to rebuild and pick up the pieces.
