WASHINGTON GROVE, Md. (WJLA) - Three firefighters were injured when a historic house went up in flames in Montgomery County - spreading to a neighboring home. The fire broke out Tuesday morning on Second Avenue in Washington Grove.

A neighbor noticed the fire and called 911.

"It just looked like the whole world was on fire, an inferno," said Peter Nagrod. "First concern is obviously my neighbors."

The homeowner also received a phone call while she was on the MARC train headed to work. She walked out the door moments before the fire engulfed the house.

The damaged home is located in a quaint town that was once a Methodist camp. The small historic homes were built as retreat homes that resemble tents. Tuesday's fire spread to the house next door.

Fighting this fire was a tremendous challenge for the fire fighters in Washington Grove. The historic homes are extremely close together and there are no roads, there are foot paths that lead to the houses. So fire fighters had to literally hand jack hundreds of feet of hose to fight the fire.

While two cats were safely rescued, three fire fighters were taken to the hospital, suffering minor injuries.
