WASHINGTON (AP) - A New York-based charter school operator has agreed to take over Imagine Southeast, a large public charter school in Washington that was nearly closed last year for poor academic performance.

The Washington Post reports Democracy Prep will take over the southeast Washington school beginning this summer. The group says it plans to continue offering single-sex classes at the school.

The school will continue to serve students in pre-K through sixth grade. It will be renamed Democracy Prep Congress Heights Public Charter School. Students who are currently enrolled will be guaranteed a spot at the school.

Democracy Prep has built a reputation for raising test scores among poor children in Harlem. The group operates nine campuses in New York and New Jersey.
