Sinkhole closes Massachusetts Avenue in Southeast
WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A water pipe leaking underground in southeast D.C. created a sinkhole on the shoulder of a residential stretch of Massachusetts Avenue.
The sinkhole, caused by an eight-inch water main leak, forced police to close a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue SE between 34th Street and N Street, a section of road that is largely residential. Crews are expected to examine the site for much of the morning, closing that section of Massachusetts Avenue for the morning rush hour while officials determine if the road is stable.
There were initial concerns that a gas smell was emanating from the sinkhole, but crews from Washington Gas checked out the scene and cleared it.
